Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth, which are the third molars in the back of your mouth, will likely cause problems as a person ages. In many instances, these teeth can become misaligned, painful and sometimes cause infection. The best time for removing wisdom teeth is typically between the ages of 15 to 25; however, removal of the wisdom teeth is an important part of preventative dentistry at any age.

Many people believe that as long as they are not in pain, they do not have to worry about their wisdom teeth. This is not case; pain free does not mean disease or problem free. In fact, wisdom teeth that come in normally may still be prone to disease, according to a study by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation. Therefore, it’s important that your dentist monitors the health of your wisdom teeth during annual dental check-ups.
